The ICMP Devices configuration page defines network reachability monitors using ICMP echo requests (ping). Each device represents a single host that the system pings at a configurable interval.

The result is available as a variable in the runtime, allowing pages, alarms, and events to react to the online or offline state of any monitored host.

Name devices according to their network function rather than their IP address only. This makes alarm and event configurations easier to maintain.

Device Settings

Each ICMP device represents one monitored host. Configure the target address, polling behavior, and logging options.

Create a new device with the Add button in the toolbar. The Add device dialog contains all device settings organized in the sections General, Connection, Historian, and Diagnostics, with default values already filled in. Enter at least the Name and IP Address and press Create.

The device row shows Enable, Name, IP Address, Interval, and Description directly and these values can be edited in place. Press the Settings icon on a device row to open the Edit device dialog, which contains the same sections and all settings of the device. Press Save to apply the changes.

SettingDescriptionExampleUnits / Format
EnableEnables or disables monitoring for this device.trueBoolean
NameUnique device name. Referenced at runtime as DeviceName.IsOnline.Router1Text
IP AddressIP address of the host to monitor.192.168.1.1IPv4
IntervalPolling interval between consecutive ping requests.5000ms
DescriptionFree text description for documentation purposes.Core network routerText
VerboseLogging verbosity level. 0 logs connection details and errors. 1 also includes protocol details.0Integer
Retry CountNumber of consecutive failed pings before the device is marked offline.3Integer
Historize OnlineEnables historian logging of IsOnline state changes for this device.trueBoolean

Notes

The IsOnline variable is updated after each ping cycle. It is true when the host responds and false when it does not. Devices are referenced at runtime as DeviceName.IsOnline, for example Router1.IsOnline.

The Retry Count setting controls how many consecutive failed pings must occur before the device transitions to offline. This prevents brief network transients from triggering false offline states.

Set the Interval to a polling period appropriate for the application. Very short intervals across many devices increase network and CPU load.

ICMP monitoring requires the target host to respond to ICMP echo requests. Hosts with ICMP blocked at a firewall will appear as offline regardless of their actual availability.
